Preparing Beam for Events

If you are planning to use your Beam at a hotel, convention center or in a similar network environment, please see our suggestions below in preparation for your event.

Beam Event Network Preparations

The event space may require clearing a captive portal to connect your device to their public WiFi network. If so, we encourage you to submit a request to the event IT team to make an exception for the Beam in order to bypass the captive portal entirely. For the IT team to accomplish this, you will need to provide them with the Beam's MAC address(es). The steps to view those are below:

  1. Connect a USB keyboard to the Beam.
  2. Using the right arrow key, highlight About from the Device Settings menu. Enter to select.
  3. The MAC address(es) for the Beam will be listed next to WiFi #1 and/or WiFi #2.

If the exception cannot be arranged, follow the links below for instructions for clearing a captive portal network:

  • Clearing a Captive Portal via WiFi
  • Clearing a Captive Portal via Ethernet
  • Clearing a Captive Portal via Bluetooth

Additional Considerations

  • For best Beam performance, you may ask the event IT team if they can create a dedicated network, with a private SSID, for the Beam to use. The Beam may not operate well in densely populated environments or on a publicly shared WiFi network as it does require a bandwidth of 3 Mbps upload and 3 Mbps download.

  • A 5 GHz network is strongly recommended in a densely populated environment. If the event offers a network capable of 5 GHz, we encourage you to request access to that network.

  • Ensure UDP ports 6868, 6869, 6870 and 6871 are open on the network firewall to allow communication to our infrastructure. See our Beam Network Administrator Guide for more details.
